Congratulations to King DECA on their amazing performance this past weekend at the SoCal District Competition. They had 13 first place wins, 9 second place wins and 8 third place wins.

On January 12th through the 14th, King DECA represented Martin Luther King High School by attending in the annual SoCal District Career Development Conference (SCDC) held in Anaheim, California. DECA is a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) and focuses primarily on areas in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. It prepares students by exposing them to real world situations in the business setting through competition with other DECA chapters.

Over 300 DECA members from various DECA chapters gathered inside the Wyndham Grove Hotel’s ballroom where they were greeted by the State Officers. Here, students also demonstrated their knowledge in business by partaking in the first part of the competition- the multiple choice test, which dealt with various topics such as marketing and hospitality. The next day, students competed in each of their respective categories in roleplays. Roleplays are presentations where members are placed in a real-life business situation and are expected plan and execute a solution to the problem to a judge. All of these simulations and tests are designed to further prepare students for future careers or interests in aforementioned DECA fields. In addition, from these experiences, students are able to gain valuable skills in communication as well as public speaking.

On the final day of the conference, all students waited in anticipation for the Grand Awards Ceremony, where many of our King DECA members were recognized as finalists, and several even placed in their categories! We had 9 first places, 4 second places and 7 third places in testing and roleplays.  In overall awards we had 4 first places and 5 second places.

This past weekend has definitely been an amazing experience for King DECA members. They are anxious to take on the California State Career Development Conference in Anaheim, CA in March where they will meet and compete with chapters not only from SoCal but from the NorCal and Silicon Valley Districts as well.
