Science Olympiad is an academic competition in which students compete in various events related to science. MLKHS has two teams (Varsity and Junior Varsity) with each team consisting of 15 members; students will also try out to make the MLKHS team. Practice runs once a week from mid-August until early April. Both teams compete in multiple invitational tournaments, a regional competition, and a state tournament (if the team makes it past regional competition). Much of the success of the program lies on the motivation of the individual students. If students are to do well, they need to prepare, study together, and practice on their own time. Students who compete in the MLKHS Science Olympiad team are generally those who are interested in science and are planning on having a career in a STEM-related field.
Science Olympiad contains 23 events, grouped into five major categories: Life, Personal & Social Science; Earth and Space Science; Physical Science & Chemistry; Technology & Engineering; Inquiry & Nature of Science.
