The science competition team is a research program that places some of Martin Luther King's best high school students into research labs at University of California Riverside, to work alongside graduate students and faculty. Many students are assigned to ongoing research projects. Others develop their own project once they are trained. These students ultimately compete in the RUSD Science Fair in February. Some remain in their lab placements for a half year. Other students will remain for many years and are eventually named on published papers.
The science competition team includes 19 different categories of STEM research, both in-person and virtual, that students are able to participate in: Animal Sciences, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Health and Biomedical Sciences, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Embedded Systems, Energy: Chemical and Physical, Engineering Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Material Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, Plant Sciences, Robotics and Intelligent Machines, and Systems Software.
