Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (N.J.R.O.T.C)

Naval Science is a four-year, multi-faceted, citizenship and leadership development program.  Although patterned after the military model, Naval Science is NOT a military recruitment program, and there is no military service obligation after completing the course.  Naval Science satisfies the California requirements for physical education, and, as an elective subject, as well.

Students in the program are expected to perform within a wider latitude of autonomy, and they are held to a higher standard of responsibility and accountability.  The two military instructors are augmented by student leaders within a hierarchy called the cadet chain of command.

The major components of the program are academic instruction, physical training, drill, and extracurricular activities.  Classroom instruction topics include, but are not limited to: naval history; followership and leadership development; values and ethics; social etiquette; behavior management; health education; and, current events. Physical training is conducted within a framework of graduated rigor designed to develop aerobic endurance, upper and lower body strength, and total physical agility. Drill is the primary method of teaching and instilling discipline.

Extra-curricular activities include, but are not limited to: field trips to military bases and museums; competitions against other schools in the areas of academics, sports, precision drill, public speaking, cyber security, and under-water robotics; participation in summer leadership camp and academies; participation in a cadet ball which features formal dining and dancing; and involvement with various community events such as parades and presentation of the national and state flags.

Students enrolled in the program are provided with uniforms, textbooks, and associated training equipment at no cost.

The program offers test-taking skills enhancement for the SAT, the ACT, and the ASVAB test.  The instructors also provide assistance, upon request, in completing and submitting application forms to the military service academies, and various college ROTC programs.

Naval Science provides a unique experience. The skills learned, and the robust character developed, will carry on with timeless relevance into a much larger arena called life.

Naval Science 1 and 2 courses satisfy the 20 units of P.E. requirement for graduation.
